Starting off the month fresh with a brand new playlist since it seems like new music is being thrown into our face left and right these days. With some long awaited releases, and some new music that came out of nowhere, here is a brand new playlist of songs that I have been keeping on repeat lately!
“Style” by Taylor Swift · It shouldn’t be a surprise that I am starting this off with my favourite off of the new Taylor Swift album. I’ve had this album on repeat since I could get my hands on it and it took a few listens to pick out a favourite, but I am picking “Style” as my favourite from the album. This almost retro-sounding tune fits perfectly with the reckless love styling of lyrics that Taylor has adapted with this particular track, speaking about none other than ex Harry Styles. I think I’ve listened to this album one too many times if someone he is sneaking into my dreams, but that won’t make me stop listening to the album! It is brilliant. This favourite is closely followed behind by “Wildest Dreams”, I almost stuck them both in this playlist.
“Baby Don’t Lie” by Gwen Stefani · An unexpected brand new release from Gwen Stefani! I don’t know if this released was talking about leading up to it because I had heard nothing, but once I started listening to the song I instantly became addicted to it. It seems to have a throwback to her original solo career style, but integrates a similar style to Rihanna’s music these days. Classic Stefani vocals really make this song her own though. I’ve heard talk that people are claiming she ripped off another artist’s song, but I chose not to listen to it so I can keep on enjoying this song as much as I have been.
“Missing You” by Betty Who · It was so incredibly hard for me to only pick one song from the first full length debut album from Betty Who. The whole album is what pure pop, the good kind, is made of! From an album full of happy feeling dance tracks to start your days off on the right side of the best, I ended up finding a favourite in the much slower paced “Missing You”. I think I went with this one because it just felt a lot more personal than the rest of the tracks, so it stood out a bit more to me as the bittersweet slow song on the album, still with an ongoing slow beat in the background to accompany her dreamy pop vocals. You should give the whole album a listen, and you’ll understand why this one may be often overlooked because it doesn’t fit in with the others as much, but is a true hit on its own.
“Outside” by Calvin Harris x Ellie Goulding · I like when two people collaborate and just get everything right! This is what happened when Calvin Harris supplied some great house music for Ellie’s amazing vocals. A breakup song that only makes you want to dance. Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding have created a chart topping hit in the past and I can only see this track doing the same if it makes it to radio. The song builds to the chorus and I really think that is a strong move for this song, playing with different levels of house music and something slightly less than that.
“American Dreamer” by Alexz Johnson · This one isn’t quite a new release, but it did still come out this year. Alex Johnson has always been a favourite of mine through the years, starting all the way back from her beginning days on the show Instant Star. She is a singer that I feel needs more recognition for all her hard work and efforts into putting out fantastic and beautifully written and executed music. She started a project through PledgeMusic a while back, and resulted with a brand new album that just came out called Let ‘Em Eat Cake. This track however came out on a small EP called Heart she released before the album. “American Dreamer” is a beautifully bittersweet song for all the dreamers out there. With a slow start, and more powerful vocals and supporting music building throughout the chorus and rest of the song, it gives you a feeling of hope and happiness for the future and the adventure to get wherever you are going. Definitely give this one a listen!
“Perfect Storm” by Tristan Prettyman · With similar music stylings to the last song, Tristan Prettyman’s softer pop music has been a delight to my ears for the past two years since I fell in love with her latest full length album, Cedar + Gold. I saw that whole album as her feelings that resulted from her split with fellow musician Jason Mraz, and if you are going through anything similar than this is definitely going to be full on anthems for you to get through everything you are feeling. Without knowing until the day it was released, she just put out a decent sized EP called Back To Home. This new collection of music is a big switch in theme from the last album as this one is more about new beginnings and love, with this track fitting in as a perfect acoustic folk-style love song. Tristan recently got married and her music is reflecting her new outlook and stage in her life. She stayed true to her musical styling, just approached it with a new perspective that actually resembles some of her earlier work a lot, and I still love it. You definitely have to give her new EP a listen, especially the my favourite track “Perfect Storm”.
